ある期間にわたって，または特定のイベントが発生するまで，もしくはこの二つを任意に組合せてデータの存在と完全性を維持すること．保存要件は，時間，イベント（例：患者の死亡），またはそれらの組合せ（例：死亡から3年後）によって表現する．複数の条件が有効な場合や，ある条件（例：裁判所による停止命令）が他の条件より優先される場合がある．

Preserving the existence and integrity of data for some period of time or until certain events have transpired, or any combination of the two. Retention requirements are expressed either as a time period, an event (e.g., the death of a patient), or a combination (e.g., 3 years after said death). Multiple requirements may be active, and some (e.g., judicial holds) may trump others.
