給電を受け運用可能状態にある耐障害ストレージサブシステムの冗長性を持つ構成部品．しかし，（冗長グループ内で）対応する優先側の構成部品が機能している間は，動作しない．ホットスタンバイの構成部品は，コントローラなどの構成部品が故障した際にシステムが継続して機能できるようにすることで，ストレージサブシステムの可用性を高める．ホットスタンバイという用語を，ディスクに対して用いる際は，特にスピンしており書込み可能状態（例えば，リビルド操作のターゲットディスクとしてなど）であるディスクを意味する．

A redundant component in a failure tolerant storage subsystem that is powered and ready to operate, but which does not operate as long as a companion primary component is functioning. Hot standby components increase storage subsystem availability by allowing systems to continue to function when a component such as a controller fails. When the term hot standby is used to denote a disk, it specifically means a disk that is spinning and ready to be written to, for example, as the target of a rebuilding operation.
