メッセージ配信時間などのユーザに明白なパラメータを指定して,帯域などのコンピュータシステムのリソースを管理する技術.ポリシールールが,ネットワークエレメントの運用を記述して,それを保証するために用いられる.IETFのQoSに関する標準規格はRSVP(Resource Reservation Protocol)とCOPS(Common Open Policy Service)プロトコルである.RSVPはあらかじめ帯域の予約を認める一方,COPSではルータやスイッチがサーバからポリシーを得ることを認めている.

A technique for managing computer system resources such as bandwidth by specifying user visible parameters such as message delivery time. Policy rules are used to describe the operation of network elements to make these guarantees. Relevant standards for QoS in the IETF are the RSVP (Resource Reservation Protocol) and COPS (Common Open Policy Service) protocols. RSVP allows for the reservation of bandwidth in advance, while COPS allows routers and switches to obtain policy rules from a server.
