さまざまな電気的・光学的メディア上の物理ポート間での、パケット転送方式に基づくローカルエリアネットワーク技術．イーサネットはいくつかある上位プロトコルの多くを転送可能であるが，最も一般的なものはTCP/IPである．イーサネットの標準規格は，IEEE 802. 3委員会が管理している．単にイーサネットと呼ぶ場合は，通常マルチポイントの銅線上の10Mbps伝送を指す．ファーストイーサネットは，同様にマルチポイントの銅設備上での100Mbps伝送を指すのに用いられる．イーサネットとファーストイーサネットは，いずれもCSMA/CD物理信号処理を用いる．ギガビットイーサネット（短縮形はGBE）は，常時伝送検出により8b/10b符号化を用いて1250Mボー（毎秒1Gビットのデータ）で伝送する．

A local area networking technology based on packetized transmissions between physical ports over a variety of electrical and optical media. Ethernet can transport any of several upper layer protocols, the most popular of which is TCP/IP. Ethernet standards are maintained by the IEEE 802.3 committee. The unqualified term Ethernet usually refers to 10 Mbps transmission on multi-point copper. Fast Ethernet is used to denote 100 Mbps transmission, also on multipoint copper facilities. Ethernet and Fast Ethernet both use CSMA/CD physical signaling. Gigabit Ethernet (abbreviated GBE) transmits at 1250 Megabaud (1 Gbit of data per second) using 8b/10b encoding with constant transmission detection.
