文書がウェブブラウザでどのように表されるかを記述するタグ（「マークアップ」符号）の集合で構成されるコンピュータ言語. HyperText Markup Language (HTML) タグは「<」と「>」の文字によって区切られる．例えば，「<p>」というマークアップ符号は新しい段落が始まることを示し，「</p>」は現在の段落が終了することを示す．
